The Los Angeles Dodgers claimed Buddy Kennedy off waivers from the Toronto Blue Jays and designated Julian Fernández for assignment prior to Friday’s game against the San Diego Padres.
Fernández was called up from Triple-A Oklahoma City in early July and appeared in one game for the Dodgers. CJ Alexander was DFA’d at the time in order to make room for Fernández on the Dodgers’ 40-man roster.
He allowed two runs over two innings in a loss to the Milwaukee Brewers.
While with Oklahoma City this year, Fernández went 3-0 with four saves, a 3.05 ERA and 1.26 WHIP in 35 games (four starts).
Fernández was signed by the Dodgers to a Minor League contract in December 2024. His professional career began by signing with the Colorado Rockies as an international free agent in July 2012.
The right-hander then joined the San Francisco Giants as he was the second pick in the Rule 5 Draft in December 2017. Fernández remained with the Giants until joining the Miami Marlins one year later.
Fernández returned to the Rockies in October 2019 and proceeded to make his MLB debut with the team in 2021. Fernández then went on to pitch in the Toronto Blue Jays organization.
Dodgers claim Buddy Kennedy
Kennedy joins the Dodgers three days after getting designated for assignment by the Blue Jays in a corresponding move to Andrés Giménez getting activated off the 10-day injured list.
Kennedy joined Toronto from Triple-A Buffalo on Aug. 5 amid a roster need at the time. It required the Blue Jays to DFA Ali Sánchez in order to add Kennedy.
He played in just two games with the Blue Jays, both of which were starts and with one coming against the Dodgers. Kennedy 1-for-5 with a double during that span.
The 26-year-old previously played in four games (one start) for the Philadelphia Phillies this season and has prior MLB experience with the Arizona Diamondbacks and Detroit Tigers.
