River Ryan joined a long list of injured Los Angeles Dodgers pitchers this week as he is poised to undergo Tommy John surgery to repair the strained ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) in his right elbow.
In more positive news surrounding the Dodgers pitching staff, Walker Buehler was activated off the 15-day injured list to start against the Milwaukee Brewers on Wednesday.
Buehler’s return comes less than three weeks after Clayton Kershaw made his 2024 debut after recovering from left shoulder surgery.
With the Dodgers rotation getting healthier, the team is considering calling up Justin Wrobleski to make a spot start against the St. Louis Cardinals on Friday in order to give Tyler Glasnow an extra day of rest, via Mike DiGiovanna of the L.A. Times:
Roberts said he hasn’t decided if Tyler Glasnow will start Friday night against the St. Louis Cardinals on regular rest or if the team will insert a spot starter — most likely left-hander Justin Wrobleski, who would have to be called up from triple-A Oklahoma City — and push Glasnow back to Saturday.
After establishing himself as a fast-rising prospect in the Dodgers farm system, Wrobleski impressed upon being thrust into the rotation at the start of July.
He went 0-1 with a 4.05 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 15 strikeouts in 20 innings pitched across four starts. Wrobleski completed at least five innings in three of his outings.
Meanwhile, Glasnow threw 98 pitches over seven innings in his last start on Aug. 11. The outing was his fourth since coming off the 15-day IL and came on an extra day of rest.
Why did Dodgers option Justin Wrobleski?
Despite putting up good numbers with the Dodgers, Wrobleski was optioned to Oklahoma City to make room for Jack Flaherty on the active roster after he was acquired from the Detroit Tigers at the trade deadline.
The left-hander will continue serving as important depth for the Dodgers in the event of another injury to one of their starting pitchers.
Wrobleski conceivably could be an option for the Dodgers bullpen it the playoffs as well.
