Dodgers Reliever Could Provide Bullpen Depth

November 20, 2024 by Last Word On Baseball

Los Angeles Dodgers shutdown reliever Blake Treinen is a free agent who would make a solid bullpen addition as a veteran. The flamethrower sported a 7-3 record with an ERA of  1.93, a WAR 1.4, and 56 strikeouts across 46.2 innings pitched this past season with the Dodgers. Treinen was also an All-Star in 2018 when he played for the Oakland Athletics. In addition, following his successful 2018 season he made history by being the first pitcher to earn 30 saves, an ERA under 1.00, and 100 strikeouts. Since 2020, the 36-year-old has been a significant piece of the Dodger’s bullpen. Treinen’s best two pitches are his sweeper and sinker. Keeping this in mind, it’s very much possible the Dodgers could hold onto Treinen, considering his consistency.

Dodgers Free Agent Reliever: A Reliable Bullpen Addition

Landing Spots For Treinen

Philadelphia Phillies

Several predictions on social media believe that Treinen joining the Phillies makes sense. Tim Kelly from the Bleacher Report predicts that the Phillies will sign Treinen to a one-year $10 million deal. Treinen is a reliable bullpen arm that the Phillies could count on. Treinen only surrendered one run in August, no runs in September, and one run in October, accounting for his shutdown ability. His career ERA of 2.78 and postseason experience is also a bonus.

New York Yankees

Treinen would be a good fit for the Yankees. In 2025, he could replace bullpen relievers Clay Holmes or Tommy Kahnle in the bullpen, who are both free agents. Holmes showcased struggles as the Yankees closer through blown saves and inconsistencies through troubles with his sinker. While Treinen’s best pitch is his sinker, he would be a strong replacement for the Yankees in the closer role. Treinen also has solid career numbers vs. the Yankees; a 1-0 record with a 0.00 ERA, 12 strikeouts, and two saves in nine appearances—all the more reason to acquire him.
