The Los Angeles Dodgers continued to make more pitching moves for a bullpen game against the National League West rival San Diego Padres. Matt Sauer, who was on the taxi squad yesterday, is officially on the 40-man roster tonight. To make room, Los Angeles designated veteran right-hander José Ureña for assignment.

Dodgers Make Two Pitching Moves, Recall Matt Sauer, DFA José Ureña
Rapid Recall
Matt Sauer has spent the majority of this season at Triple-A Oklahoma City. However, the former New York Yankees farmhand has been up to the majors five times thus far with the Dodgers. He was on the roster for the opening series in Tokyo, but did not appear in a game. In the 20 2/3 innings he has pitched, he has allowed nine runs on 16 hits, while striking out 13. According to MLB rules, a player can be optioned five times a season. Therefore, the next time Sauer is sent down to the minors, he can’t be recalled.
DFA’d Twice in Two Weeks
The Dodgers have been short of bullpen options from the right side. Relievers Blake Treinen and Kirby Yates have both been on the injured list for an extended time this season. One-time closer Evan Phillips is out for the rest of the year with Tommy John surgery. As a result, they signed Ureña for added depth last week. He had just been designated for assignment by the Toronto Blue Jays. In his brief stint in Dodger Blue, the veteran gave up one earned run in two appearances. However, with Kirby Yates and Michael Kopech returning, Ureña was the odd man out.

More Support in the Not-Too-Distant Future
Starting pitchers Blake Snell and Tyler Glasnow had bullpen sessions to begin their eventual return to the starting rotation. Both reported feeling good afterward.
The Unicorn of Baseball
Shohei Ohtani also pitched in a simulated game today. He threw a variety of pitches. However, the Dodgers say he will return sometime after the All-Star break. The Dodgers are hoping to get an “arm up” on the competition soon.
