Alex Freeland is in the Los Angeles Dodgers lineup on Wednesday to make his MLB debut against the Cincinnati Reds. Freeland is starting at third base and batting ninth.
Freeland is going to become the latest Dodgers rookie to wear the special MLB debut jersey patch this season.
He was added onto the Dodgers roster Tuesday as the corresponding move to Hyeseong Kim going on the 10-day injured list with left shoulder bursitis. Kim is expected to return to Los Angeles in the coming days to receive an injection as part of the treatment for his ailing shoulder.
Freeland is the top infield prospect in the Dodgers organization and ranked No. 3 overall by MLB Pipeline. He was drafted by the Dodgers in the third round in 2022.
Freeland appeared in 94 games for Triple-A Oklahoma City prior to his promotion, batting .253/.377/.421 with 26 doubles, 12 home runs and 71 RBI. Freeland finished the 2024 season at the Triple-A level as well, which came after starting with High-A Great Lakes and earning a promotion to Double-A during the year.
Alex Freeland’s role with Dodgers
Freeland is expected to primarily play third base during his time up with the Dodgers. It’s possible he’ll receive some opportunities at second base as well.
Freeland was drafted as a shortstop but began to play second base and third base over the last two seasons. While with the Comets this year, he started 67 games at shortstop and 26 at third base.
There’s an opening of sorts at third base with the Dodgers considering Max Muncy is still on the injured list and just started his rehab assignment, and Tommy Edman recently missed a game because of more right ankle trouble.
