Ryan had Tommy John surgery in August, and is expcted to miss the 2025 season.
The Dodgers on Thursday placed pitcher River Ryan on the 60-day injured list, making room for the signing of Clayton Kershaw to a one-year contract.
Kershaw, back for his franchise-record-tying 18th season with the Dodgers, signed a $7.5 million contract, and can earn up to a reported $8.5 million in additional bonuses.
Ryan made his major league debut last July and started four games for the Dodgers, but had Tommy John surgery in mid-August, ending his 2024 season and likely wiping out his entire 2025 season as well.
The future remains bright for the 26-year-old right-hander, who made top-100 prospect lists this offseason at The Athletic and at ESPN.
“The injury and the lost time do hurt his overall outlook,” Keith Law wrote on January 27 at The Athletic. “He’s a No. 2 starter if he comes back at 100 percent and can hold up for a full season.”
Ryan is the second pitcher placed on the 60-day injured list this week. Gavin Stone, who is expected to miss the 2025 season after shoulder surgery in October, was placed on the IL on Tuesday when Kiké Hernández signed.
