The Los Angeles Dodgers have an extra reliever in their clubhouse. Although nothing is official, right-handed reliever Will Klein has a locker, according to Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic. Michael Kopech, who has battled multiple injuries this season, is headed to the injured list.

Dodgers Place Michael Kopech on Injured List
Michael Kopech is going on the IL, Dave Roberts said. Of the issues bothering Kopech physically, Roberts said, “there’s a few of them.”

A Shell of Himself
Kopech joined the Dodgers at the trade deadline last year. He quickly became a trusted option out of the bullpen. Manager Dave Roberts used Kopech in high-leverage and closer situations. Kopech filled the void admirably, rewarding his manager with an unhittable repertoire and minuscule ERA of 1.13. His effectiveness began to wane last October as his control seemed to leave him. His physical struggles continued into 2025, as he began the year on IL with a shoulder issue. After a few outings, the big reliever had a torn meniscus surgically repaired in his knee. Since his return to the roster, his command has been absent.
“Banged Up”
After another frustrating outing where Kopech gave up more walks, Roberts said, “I don’t know if he’s banged up…just having a hard time syncing his throw.” For his part, the reliever said, “I’m battling a couple of things right now. I’ll leave it at that.” This casts serious doubt on Kopech’s availability for the postseason roster.
A Rookie’s Chance to Impress
Will Klein has been up with the Dodgers several times this season. He has a respectable ERA of 3.38. Control has been an issue for the 25-year-old, as he has walked nine hitters over 10 appearances. However, he does have impressive velocity and swing and miss stuff, as evidenced by 15 strikeouts over that time. Unfortunately, Klein has struggled this season at Triple-A Oklahoma City with an ERA of 5.16.
For their sake, the Dodgers hope that Klein can at least be as effective in the big leagues as he was last time. They need him to be.
