Dodgers Place Freddie Freeman (Ankle) on the 10-Day IL

April 4, 2025 by Last Word On Baseball

The Dodgers placed Freddie Freeman on the 10-day IL with an injured ankle.

The Los Angeles Dodgers have placed first baseman Freddie Freeman on the 1o-day injured list, the team announced on Thursday. Freeman re-injured the ankle that was surgically repaired in December. This announcement comes as Los Angeles is embarking on its first domestic road trip of the season. The defending World champions are set to take on the Philadelphia Phillies tomorrow in what looks to be a marquee matchup. Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic reports that the IL stint is retroactive to March 31.

Freddie Freeman Goes on Injured List with Ankle Injury

Proceeding With Caution

The reigning World Series MVP was originally listed as day-to-day. However, manager Dave Roberts said that they would be cautious with Freeman.  The weather forecast is set to be cold, wet, and windy. Therefore, discretion is the better part of valor. The Dodgers aren’t willing to risk further injury at such an early stage of the season. For his part, Freeman said that he tweaked the ankle when he slipped trying to repair a leak in his shower.

Will He Be Missed?

There is no question that the Dodgers’ roster is loaded. Yet, as recent history indicates, Freeman’s presence in the lineup is pivotal. He may have only a .250 batting average, but his two home runs have been critical in the Dodgers’ rallies which have resulted in an 8-0 start. The depth that the Dodgers pride themselves on will be tested early.

Who Will Replace Freddie?

Super-utility man Kiké Hernandez has played in Freeman’s stead thus far. However, Max Muncy can play first base as well. The Dodgers have yet to announce a corresponding roster move to replace Freeman on the 40-man roster. They have multiple options, and the educated guess would be Hyeseong Kim. The Korean star is known for his defensive prowess, but was sent down to work on swing modifications. But nothing has been made official yet.

Whatever the move is, the Dodgers have big aspirations for the season. It is clear that they are not interested in jeopardizing the long-term health of their All-Star first baseman.
