Dodgers Mourn Passing Of MLB Hall Of Famer Rickey Henderson

December 23, 2024 by Dodger Blue

Major League Baseball Hall of Famer Rickey Henderson passed away on Friday at the age of 65. He is survived by his wife, Pamela, and three children, Angela, Alexis and Adrianna.

Henderson played for nine teams in his 25-year career, including most notably the Oakland Athletics, whom he was with for four different stints (1979-1984; 1989-1993; 1994-1995; and 1998).

Henderson also had stops with the New York Yankees (1985-1989), Toronto Blue Jays (1993), San Diego Padres (1996-1997 and 2001), Anaheim Angels (1997), New York Mets (1999-2000), Seattle Mariners (2000), Boston Red Sox (2002) and Los Angeles Dodgers (2003).

Henderson ended his big league career by signing with the Dodgers over the All-Star break during the 2003 season. He began the year with the Newark Bears of the independent Atlantic League and put up impressive numbers to earn another chance in the Majors.

With the Dodgers, Henderson hit .208/.321/.306 with one double, two home runs, five RBI and three stolen bases in 30 games.

Widely considered the greatest leadoff hitter of all-time, Henderson batted .279/.401/.419 with 3,055 hits, 510 doubles, 66 triples, 297 home runs and 1,115 RBI in his career.

Henderson is the MLB all-time leader in stolen bases (1,406) and runs scored (2,295). At the time of his death, he also ranked among the top 10 in games played (fourth, 3,081), plate appearances (fourth, 13,346), walks (second, 2,190), leadoff home runs (first, 81) and unintentional walks (first, 2,129).

Henderson was a 10-time All-Star, three-time Silver Slugger Award winner and two-time World Series champion. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2009, receiving votes on 94.8% of the ballots.

Dodgers statement on Rickey Henderson

“The Dodgers mourn the passing of Rickey Henderson, legend and Hall of Famer,” the team said in a statement. “The organization was privileged to have a small part in his career, and we offer our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and fans.
