The National League West second-place San Francisco Giants lost on Saturday. So, too, did the third-place San Diego Padres, the fourth-place Arizona Diamondbacks, and the fifth-place Colorado Rockies. In other words, the NL West first-place Los Angeles Dodgers had a golden opportunity to gain a full game on all four of their division rivals.
Didn’t happen.
They, too, lost on Saturday, by a score of 5-2 to the NL East second-place New York Mets at Citi Field, with Dodgers right-hander Tony Gonsolin suffering his first loss of the season to go along with his two wins.
The Vacaville, CA native and Dodgers ninth-round draft pick in 2016 out of Saint Mary’s College of California in Moraga, CA also saw his ERA soar to an ugly 4.05, having allowed four runs on seven hits, with three costly walks and four strikeouts in his 5.0-inning fifth start of the season.
“That long one yesterday didn’t go great for us, but luckily we pulled out the win yesterday,” Gonsolin said postgame, referring to the Dodgers marathon 13-inning – four hour and eight-minute long game (and win) over the Mets on Friday. “Today, I just tried to give everything I had and go as deep as I could. Unfortunately, I was only able to get five, but fortunately, I was able to get five at the same time,” he added.

The crushing blow for Gonsolin was a game-changing fourth-inning bases loaded two-run double to center by always-dangerous Mets right fielder Juan Soto. On the bright side (if you can call it that), the Mets’ would-be third run on the play was thrown out at the plate on a relay throw from Dodgers center fielder Tommy Edman to shortstop Mookie Betts to catcher Dalton Rushing for a perfectly executed 8-6-3 put out, so there’s that.

As for those two Dodgers runs, the first came on a sharp single up the middle by Dodgers third baseman Kiké Hernández with one out in the top of the second inning scoring Dodgers left fielder Andy Pages from second base, followed by a swinging bunt by Rushing, scoring Edman from third base.

Here’s how the NL West stands after all five teams lost on Saturday:.
