Los Angeles Dodgers right-handed reliever Michael Grove will miss the start of the 2025 season due to injury, as reported by Jack Harris of the Los Angeles Times. Grove, who underwent off-season shoulder surgery, is expected to be sidelined for about a month, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts confirmed. The surgery was necessary to repair a lingering shoulder injury that had already forced the 26-year-old off the roster during the middle of the postseason last year. With Grove’s recovery taking longer than anticipated, the Dodgers will likely need to adjust their bullpen plans early in the season as they await his return to full health.
Michael Grove Will Miss the Start of the Season
Grove played a key role in the Dodgers’ bullpen during their 2024 World Series run. With the starting rotation plagued by injuries, Grove became a reliable innings-eater and helped bridge the gap in key games. However, his performance wasn’t without challenges, posting a 5.12 ERA across 51 innings of work in 2024.
The Dodgers have made moves to strengthen their bullpen for the upcoming season. The free-agent signings of Kirby Yates, Tanner Scott, and Blake Treinen signal Los Angeles’ intention to stay competitive in their pursuit of another World Series title. As a result, the team traded reliable reliever Ryan Brasier to the Chicago Cubs to clear space on the crowded 40-man roster. While this move raised some eyebrows, the presence of several veteran arms left the Dodgers with limited roster flexibility. When healthy, Grove offers some of that flexibility, as he still has minor-league options available and can be shuffled back and forth as needed.
While the Dodgers have made moves to bolster their bullpen, the immediate priority for Grove is his health. As is often the case with the Dodgers, injuries are inevitable, not if but when. When Grove is ready to return, he will likely be called upon to contribute to the team’s championship pursuit. It will take all 26 players working together to win another title, and Grove’s role, when the time comes, will be essential.
