The Los Angeles Dodgers have claimed Brent Honeywell Jr. off waivers from the Pittsburgh Pirates. The 29-year-old is a right-handed relief pitcher. As the MLB trade deadline gets closer, more teams are letting go of players, and contending teams are maximizing waiver pickups. The Pirates designated Honeywell Jr. for assignment about a day ago, and it wasn’t long before he was claimed off waivers.

Honeywell Jrs. Injury Career
Honeywell Jr. has a 2.70 ERA in two games played this season for the Pirates. He wore number 34 and previously played for the Tampa Bay Rays, San Diego Padres, and the Chicago White Sox. During his time in the Rays system, Honeywell was once a top prospect. In the 2014 MLB Draft, the right-hander was chosen in the second round. Unfortunately, he’s dealt with countless injuries that left him on the IL several times, negatively affecting his career.
Arm surgeries are nothing new to Honeywell, and he had to go through four of them in a 3 1/2-year span, one of which was Tommy John. During his minor league career, the reliever spent a good bit of time with the Durham Bulls. Honeywell didn’t spend much time with the Pirates, as they recently selected him on July 7th. At that time the Pirates had placed Bailey Falter on the IL.
Honeywell made his MLB Debut with the Rays back on April 11th, 2021. At Triple-A Durham, he had a record of 12-8 in 24 starts with an ERA of 3.64. However, spending so much time on the IL was a tough pill to swallow for Honeywell. His best season overall in the majors was with the Padres, recording an ERA of 4.05 with a larger sample size. Since he only had two starts with the Pirates before being placed on waivers, it will be interesting to see how he will pitch with the Dodger organization.
