The Los Angeles Dodgers have claimed right-hander Yoendrys Gomez off waivers from the New York Yankees, according to Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic. The Dodgers have an open 40-man roster spot since they designated Eddie Rosario for assignment earlier this week. The 25-year-old pitcher spent his entire career with New York until he was designated for assignment earlier this week. Gomez is out of minor-league options and will join the Dodgers in Los Angeles. As a result, Los Angeles will have to make room on the big-league club.

Cream of the Yankee Crop?
Gomez has been among the top 30 prospects in the Yankee system since being signed out of Venezuela in 2016. New York put him on the 40-man roster to protect Gomez from being poached in the Rule 5 Draft. He doesn’t have very much experience pitching at the big league level. Gomez missed a portion of 2021 and 2022 because of Tommy John surgery.

The right-hander has 23 1/3 innings pitched in the big leagues. This includes a 3.09 Earned Run Average overall. His 2025 pitching resume features 1o innings over six appearances. In large measure, the young right-hander is still a blank canvas.
Is Necessity the Mother of Invention?
Once again, the Dodgers are dealing with multiple injuries to their starting rotation. They need a reliable source to cover some innings. The temporary fill-ins have left a lot to be desired. Starting with a high ERA and a high walk rate. This has led to overuse of a mostly reliable bullpen. And it’s still April. The good news is that it seems that Tony Gonsolin will rejoin the club soon. The slated number five starter, lifting weights, tweaked his back the last week of spring training. He might make his first start of the season as early as next week.
For the Dodgers, reinforcements can’t come soon enough.
