Freddie Freeman said he couldn’t help himself.
He wasn’t supposed to hit during the first full-squad workout at Camelback Ranch on Saturday.
“But I swung,” Freeman said.
Freeman had right ankle surgery on Dec. 5. He was able to do everything on the field on Saturday except for run. However, he is getting closer.
Freeman has been working out on a boost treadmill, which de-loads body weight and allows him to run. He said he’s now running at 80% of his body weight. He remains optimistic to play Opening Day in Tokyo on March 18.
“I am perfectly on track for that,” Freeman said. “We’ll get a better sense when I’m not in an inflated bubble helping me run, but probably middle of next week by the end of the next week I’ll have a really good sense of how I’m feeling.”
Freeman has another target should everything progress. He’s looking at getting in Cactus League games on Feb. 27 or Feb. 28.
The Dodgers begin Cactus League play on Thursday.
And there’s another target — one he aims for every season.
“The goal is 162 (games),” he said. “Hopefully it’s 161 because I always take the game off after we win the division. … I’m doing everything I can to make sure I’m ready for 162.”
