Edman had to leave yesterday’s game in the fourth inning after re-injuring his ankle while rounding first base. This is the same ankle that made him miss time earlier this year. It has been apparent that the ankle has not fully healed from the injury earlier this year, as the former NLCS Most Valuable Player has been a shell of himself offensively. He has struggled to maintain a batting average above .200. However, he has manned third base admirably in Max Muncy’s absence.
Time to Heal
Manager Dave Roberts said that there is no timetable for the utility man’s return. They prefer not to rush Edman back, which would allow the ankle to heal completely as they look to October.
Returning Sooner Than Expected
For his part, Muncy is back in the lineup tonight after missing a month due to a deep knee contusion. The Dodgers are counting their blessings after it appeared that he sustained a severe knee injury, which could have sidelined him for the rest of the season. The initial timeline for his return was six weeks. It has been a month. The Dodgers have struggled offensively while he has been hurt. This is reflected in their 10-14 record in the month of July. As a result, the San Diego Padres have crept within three games in the National League West standings. Muncy has the ability to lengthen the Dodgers’ lineup even in the midst of a perennial All-Star. Before his injury, the third baseman was hitting above .300 with double-digit homers the previous month.
There is no convenient time for injuries to happen. However, the Dodgers would prefer Edman to fully recover just in time to contribute in the stretch run.
