The Los Angeles Dodgers announced on Wednesday morning the acquisition of Cavan Biggio from the Toronto Blue Jays in exchange for minor league right-handed pitcher Braydon Fisher.
Biggio, 29, was designated for assignment on June 7 after appearing in 44 games for the Blue Jays. He hit .200 with four doubles, two homers and nine RBI this season with Toronto. He spent six seasons with the Blue Jays, slashing a combined .227/.343/.382 with 77 doubles, four triples, 48 homers and 176 RBI in 490 career games. He was originally drafted by the Blue Jays in the fifth round of the 2016 First Year Player Draft out of Notre Dame University.
In 2023, the lefty-hitting Biggio played 49 games at second base, 27 games in right field, 20 games at first base, 13 games at third base, eight games at designated hitter and one game at shortstop.
Biggio came up with Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Bo Bichette, igniting the hopes of a Toronto fan base of an exciting future. Some of these expectations were unfairly hoisted upon Biggio, the son of former MLB great Craig Biggio.
However, Biggio handled the good and bad days admirably. Throughout his tenure in Toronto, Biggio earned respect throughout the organization, making the decision to DFA him difficult for those involved.
Fisher, 23, was 2-1 with a 5.86 ERA in 15 games for Double-A Tulsa this season. He had 30 strikeouts in 19.0 innings with 15 walks and a .264 batting average against. He has been with the Dodgers five seasons, tossing a combined 228.2 innings in 134 games (12 starts) and an 18-14 mark with a 4.53 ERA. He was drafted by Los Angeles in the fourth round of the 2018 First Year Player Draft out of Clear Falls High School.
The Dodgers have yet to announce a corresponding 40-man roster move at the time of this publication.
