Dave Roberts in Favor of a Salary Cap with a Caveat

December 5, 2025 by Last Word On Baseball

Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts made a bit of news in his latest media appearance. Appearing in “Good Sports” on Amazon Prime the future Hall of Fame manager said that he would be in favor of a salary cap for baseball with one major provision. He wants a salary floor as well.

In His Own Words

“…I’m all right with that. Roberts elaborated further. “I think the NBA has done a nice job of revenue sharing with the players and the owners. Then he lowered the boom. “But if you are going to suppress spending at the top, I think you need to raise the floor and make those bottom feeders spend money too.”

Roberts echo’s the concerns of the Players Association. Not surprisingly, they are adamantly opposed to a limit without making the owners spend a percentage of the

The Lay of the Land

Ironically, this sentiment comes from the highest-paid manager in baseball and public face of the team with the largest payroll in baseball who won back-to-back World Series. Roberts even joked in a post-game interview on the verge of the Fall Classic about the Dodgers “ruining baseball.” Most of the small market have come out in favor of a mechanism to control spending. However, Hal Steinbrenner of the Yankees is also in favor of a cap, alluding to the fact that that it’s hard “to compete” with the Dodgers when referring to the Tanner Scott free agency last off season.

Unfortunately, there are ownerships like the Pittsburgh Pirates and Washington Nationals who refuse to invest back into the players to make their teams competitive.

The Clock is Ticking

The discussion comes ahead of the current Collective Bargaining Agreement which is set to expire at season’s end. Consequently, Roberts words may serve as encouraging to get a deal done before there is a work stoppage.
