Both Dustin May and Corbin Burnes tossed quality starts, but Arizona’s ability to score made the difference in a 3-0 Dodgers defeat.
Off the heels of a thrilling 14-11 victory on Friday, the Dodgers couldn’t repeat their dramatics on Saturday as they were shut out by the Arizona Diamondbacks 2-0.
It was a pitcher’s duel between Dustin May and Corbin Burnes, as both right handers managed to toss quality starts, but Burnes had the slight edge over May with seven shutout innings of work.
After both teams were held scoreless through the first two and a half innings of play, Corbin Carroll teed off on the first pitch he saw from May in the bottom of the third, lining it right over the head of Hyeseong Kim and motoring his way for a leadoff stand up triple. Ketel Marte only needed to put the ball in play to bring home Arizona’s first run.
May quickly bounced back to strike out two looking to end the bottom of the third, before striking out two more hitters looking in the fourth inning and keeping Arizona scoreless in the fifth.
After inducing a double play to get two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning, he allowed a first pitch sinker right on the inside heart of the plate to Eugenio Suárez, depositing it over the center field wall at 455 feet to give him his second home run in as many games. Suárez’s 12 home runs on the year are tied with Shohei Ohtani and Kyle Schwarber for the National League lead. Arizona would tack on an insurance run off of Kirby Yates with a double from Pavin Smith to give themselves a three run lead.
Although May suffered a tough loss on Saturday, he became the first Dodger starting pitcher since Yoshinobu Yamamoto back on April 18 to pitch into the seventh inning. His 6 2⁄3 innings of work was the longest outing he had since tossing seven shutout innings against the San Diego Padres on May 6, 2023 (against future teammate Blake Snell).
The Dodgers have now been shut out three times this year, with Saturday’s defeat being their first shutout loss on the road. It is the first time the Dodgers didn’t record a single extra base hit since allowing a Dodger Stadium worst 16 runs to the Chicago Cubs on April 12.
With the Padres erupting for a 20-run outburst against the Colorado Rockies, the Dodgers are now tied with San Diego for the division lead.
