Betts, Ohtani, and Hernández all won Silver Slugger Awards on Tuesday. All three Dodgers captured All-MLB honors on Thursday.
Dodgers Shohei Ohtani, Mookie Betts, and Teoscar Hernández were named to the All-MLB teams announced on Thursday night. Ohtani was the first-team designated hitter and Betts in the first-team outfield, while Hernández was named to the second team as an outfielder.
All-MLB teams were decided by a panel of media members and baseball officials, combined with fan voting for the two weeks immediately following the regular season.
Ohtani has been an All-MLB team staple for four years running. He was first-team DH in 2021 and 2023 before this year, and second-team DH in 2022. He was also a first-team starting pitcher in 2022-23 with the Angels and second-team starting pitcher in 2021.
It was a busy night of awards for Ohtani, who was also the Edgar Martínez Award winner as the best DH in MLB, and won the National League Hank Aaron Award as the league’s best ffensive player.
Betts had a strong season, hitting .289/.372/.491 with a 145 OPS+ and 4.8 rWAR, but he also missed eight weeks with a broken left hand. He started 61 games at shortstop and 12 games at second base, but after returning from the injured list in August went back to familiar territory in right field.
MLB listed Betts among the outfield nominees. This is the fifth first-team All-MLB outfield selection for Betts, who also did so in 2019-2020 and 2022-23.
“The infield, that was hard. But you’ve got to do what you’ve got to do. Players gotta play,” Betts said during the awards ceremony, which was televised Thursday by MLB Network.
Hernández hit hit .272/.339/.501 with a 141 OPS+ after signing a one-year deal with the Dodgers, setting career bests with 33 home runs and 4.3 rWAR. He led all National League outfielders in home runs and runs batted in (99). He was named a Silver Slugger Award winner on Tuesday, for the third time in his career.
This is the second All-MLB selection for Hernández, who also was on the second team in 2021 with the Blue Jays.
Freddie Freeman was the only player to earn all-MLB honors in each of the first five years of the honor, which originated in 2019. He was one of 10 nominees this year at first base, but Vladimir Guerrero Jr. captures first-team and Bryce Harper second-team honors at the position.
Jack Flaherty had a 3.17 ERA and 3.48 FIP in 28 starts between the Tigers and Dodgers this season, with 194 strikeouts and 38 walks in 162 innings. He was acquired by the Dodgers on July 30 just ahead of the trade deadline. Flaherty was nominated, but was not one of the 10 starting pitchers selected to the first or second teams.
Catcher Will Smith and reliever Alex Vesia were also nominated for All-MLB honors, but did not win at their positions. William Contreras and Salvador Pérez were the two All-MLB catchers. Emmanuel Clase and Rylan Helsley were first-team relief pitchers, while Mason Miller and Kirby Yates were on the second team.
The Dodgers have had at least one first-team All-MLB player in all six years of the award, and at least two first-teamers for the last four seasons in a row.
