All-Star Dodgers Catcher Could Be Behind the Plate for Division Series

October 4, 2025 by Last Word On Baseball

The Los Angeles Dodgers could get a significant boost behind the plate tomorrow. Manager Dave Roberts announced that Will Smith is available to catch in the upcoming NLDS against the Philadelphia Phillies, according to David Vassegh of SportsNet LA. The jury is still out on whether he will start Game One. Smith was available off the bench to pinch hit during the Wild Card Series, had Los Angeles needed him. The Dodgers will continue to carry three catchers on their roster.

Is This An Upgrade?

Smith has been out of the lineup since early September after he took a foul ball off his right hand. He underwent X-rays and a CT scan, and both tests came back negative. After a few days of rest, he was back in the lineup. However, the swelling persisted, and he had further tests done. This time, they revealed a hairline fracture. As a result, the All-Star was sidelined for the rest of the regular season. The Dodgers were able to clinch the National League West without him.

The Unsung Hero

The Dodgers made an under-the-radar trade with the Tampa Bay Rays on the eve of the deadline that has paid huge dividends. They gave up Hunter Feduccia in exchange for Ben Rortvedt as part of a three-team deal. The rookie has stepped in with the poise of a veteran and handled the pitching staff like a pro, garnering high praise from his teammates and his manager. As an added bonus, he has hit close to a .3oo batting average in the closing weeks of the season.

Will the Thrill

Smith was having an MVP-type season in the first half of 2025, hitting nearly .380 with runners in scoring position. However, he has tapered off in the second half. If he could return to a semblance of himself, the Dodgers would be grateful.
