Alex Call’s offensive approach is to be a tough out.
But the outfielder has been searching for the moment that showcases it for the Dodgers since he was acquired at the trade deadline on July 31.
He got his moment with four hits — coming a triple shy of a cycle — against the Rockies in Tuesday’s 11–4 win in Colorado. Call was one of six Dodger hitters with multiple hits in the second game of the series.
An offensive barrage was needed after Monday’s low-scoring, walk-off loss to the Rockies. With Call leading the charge, the Dodgers keep steady with a 2-game lead in National League West.
“It was good to see him fire on the first-pitch fastball, hit a homer to get his day started off the right way,” Dave Roberts said. “But he just takes good at-bats and found a way to drive in some runs and get on base and almost hit for the cycle. That was exciting. Just a gritty ball player.”

The numbers show that Call can execute his tough-out approach. His 18.6% chase rate is in the 97th percentile of Major League Baseball. His 15.8% strikeout and 11.3% walk rates are in the top 20% across the league.
Call’s first home run with Los Angeles set the stage for a career night as a Dodger.

He crushed a first-pitch fastball from starter Austin Gomber 453 feet to left field in the second inning. It was Call’s farthest hit ball this season, as well as the farthest hit homer by a Dodger in 2025.
The previous farthest-hit Dodger home run this season was by Shohei Ohtani, when he hit a 448-foot homer against the Rockies on April 16. On Tuesday, Ohtani hit his own, three at-bats after Call’s home run. It was his 44th of the season.
The homers extended the Dodgers’ lead to 4–0. Freddie Freeman and Teoscar Hernández started the scoring with RBI doubles in the first.
Call’s second RBI hit was a single in the third. It jump-started the three-run frame that led to a 7–0 lead. Then the cycle watch was activated in the fifth with a double — his third hit in three plate appearances.

He only needed a triple to complete the cycle. Call had four career triples entering Tuesday.
But his last hit of the night — a single in the seventh — came up short of history. Call struck out swinging in the eighth, in his last chance to complete the cycle.
Will Smith’s three hits were the second most by a Dodger. Call, Smith and Ohtani led the lineup with two runs batted in on Tuesday.
