The Los Angeles Dodgers are back on top, and they did it in style. After a tough stretch earlier in the season, the Dodgers showed some serious fight this past weekend by sweeping the San Diego Padres in a three-game series. It had just about everything: big homers, clutch pitching, and great fielding.
It all started Friday night when Teoscar Hernández came through with the kind of power Dodgers fans have been waiting to see. With the game tied in the seventh inning, Hernández launched a 400-foot homer into the night, giving L.A. a 3–1 lead they wouldn’t give back. That shot not only gave the Dodgers the win, but it also tied them with the Padres for the top spot in the NL West. After the struggle leading up to this series, this might have been the spark the team needed.
Snell Faces Old Team, Dodgers Dominate
Then came Saturday, when the Dodgers flexed their muscles. Blake Snell made his first start of the season against his old team, and while he gave up a couple of runs, he still held things together and gave the Dodgers a chance to build on their lead. And that’s exactly what they did. Teoscar Hernández stayed hot, driving in runs, and Michael Conforto added to the fun with a big RBI single. By the time it was over, the Dodgers had rolled to a 6–0 win. Not only did they win the series, but they also secured the head-to-head tiebreaker over the Padres. That’s huge when you’re fighting for a division title.
Betts’ Clutch bomb seals the Sweep
However, the real show took place on Sunday. The Dodgers and Padres battled back and forth, with San Diego tying the game late. It looked like the Padres might spoil the sweep when Alex Vesia gave up the tying run in the eighth inning. But then, in the bottom of the inning, Mookie Betts came to the plate and reminded everyone why he’s one of the best in baseball. Betts smashed a homer, his 13th of the season, to put the Dodgers even with the Padres. Vesia closed out the game in the ninth inning. The stadium went wild, and just like that, the sweep was complete with a 5–4 win. This bomb was big for Betts. Recently, he hasn’t been playing his best, but today, he gave it his all and helped secure the win.
What stood out from this series wasn’t just the hitting; it was how the team played together. The Dodgers played like a team that knew they had something to prove. For most of this season, the Dodgers have been up and down, sometimes looking unbeatable and other times struggling to put runs on the board. But against the Padres, they locked in from start to finish; they looked like the team that won the World Series.
A Statement Weekend at Chavez Ravine
This sweep also showed how balanced the Dodgers can be when they’re at their best. From Freddie, Betts, and Hernández hitting bombs to Conforto and Ohtani grinding out walks and key hits, to pitchers like Snell and Glasnow stepping up, the whole team contributed. Even the bullpen, which has been shaky lately, found ways to hang on when it mattered most.
The Dodgers now sit back on top of the NL West with a tight lead over the Padres, but more importantly, they have momentum. Winning three straight games against your biggest rival not only helps in the standings but also builds confidence for the final stretch of the season.
If the Dodgers can keep playing like this, with their stars showing up in clutch moments and role players doing their jobs, they’ll be in a great spot not just to win the division but to make a real run at the World Series.
For now, though, Dodger fans can just enjoy this sweep. The team needed a statement series, and they delivered one in the best way possible, against the Padres, in front of their home crowd, with the whole division race on the line.
