THE GAME: Even though the Angels started eight of their nine projected Opening Day starters, they were still shut out in a 6-0 loss to the Texas Rangers on Monday afternoon at Tempe Diablo Stadium.
PITCHING REPORT: Left-hander Reid Detmers gave up three runs in the first inning, two on a homer. He was pulled with two outs. Detmers returned for the second inning and worked a perfect inning on seven pitches. Detmers said he had too much adrenaline for his first spring start in the first inning, before settling down. “That’s what spring training is for, to get used to everything and start to feel your body a little bit more,” he said. “By the time the season comes around, you’re good to go.” Detmers is returning to the rotation this spring after pitching in relief last season. … Right-hander Ryan Johnson pitched a perfect inning but gave up three runs in his second inning of work. All three runs scored while minor league left-hander Leonard Garcia was on the mound. … Left-hander Brent Suter, right-hander Ryan Zeferjahn, left-hander Tayler Saucedo and left-hander Jayvien Sandridge each pitched one scoreless inning. Suter, Zeferjahn and Sandridge retired the side in order. … Right-hander Chris Cortez, who finished the first inning after Detmers came out, threw a 100 mph fastball. He retired the only batter he faced.
HITTING REPORT: Zach Neto had two hits, including a double into the left-field corner. He added his first stolen base of the spring, with a feet-first slide. Neto has been hurt twice on head-first slides, so he’s trying to work on sliding feet first. Neto was also called out on strikes after a successful Rangers ABS challenge. … Jo Adell poked a single to right field on an 0-and-2 pitch. He struck out in his next trip. … Jorge Soler hit a fly ball to the warning track. The Angels have not gotten a home run from any of their projected major leaguers through the first three games. … Mike Trout was the only one of the projected Opening Day starters who didn’t play. Trout is set to DH on Tuesday. … Nick Madrigal doubled into the gap in left-center. Madrigal is a former first-round draft pick who is in camp on a minor-league deal. … Jeimer Candelario led off the eighth with a double, but he was stranded.
DEFENSE REPORT: Neto, the shortstop, couldn’t make the play on a ground ball hit to left in the third inning. It was ruled a hit. The hit opened the door for the Rangers to score three runs. Neto ended the inning with a nice play on a bouncer to his left. … Right fielder Raudi Rodriguez made a running catch in the gap in right center.
