Angels place Reid Detmers on injured list while awaiting MRI results

September 11, 2025 by Los Angeles Daily News

SEATTLE — The Angels still had no news on the results of left-hander Reid Detmers’ MRI exam as of Thursday afternoon.

They nonetheless placed Detmers on the 15-day injured list with “elbow inflammation,” which is a catch-all term used before the full extent of the injury is determined.

Detmers left the game on Wednesday afternoon with what he said was a “dead” feeling on the outside of his elbow. Detmers did not travel to Seattle.

“We’re going to figure out what it is,” interim manager Ray Montgomery said. “Make sure it’s nothing structural, hopefully. And then once I know, you’ll know.”

Even in a best-case scenario in which there is nothing seriously wrong with his elbow, Detmers is unlikely to pitch again this season.

In his first season as a reliever, Detmers posted a 3.96 ERA in 61 games and 63⅔ innings. Much of the damage he allowed this season came in a three-game span in late April and early May, when he faced 13 batters and 12 of them scored. Since then, Detmers had a 2.19 ERA over his last 49 games.

The Angels promoted right-hander Chase Silseth from Triple-A to take Detmers’ spot on the roster.

PERAZA’S PERFORMANCE

The Angels spent about a month retooling Oswald Peraza’s swing immediately after they picked him up from the New York Yankees in a deadline trade.

Peraza hit .148 with a .434 OPS in his first 83 games this season, mostly with the Yankees. On Aug. 30, Peraza had a go-ahead two-run hit coming off the bench, and after that the Angels began giving him regular playing time. Peraza has hit .282 with a .726 OPS since then.

“I’m playing more and I have more confidence,” Peraza said on Thursday. “I see more pitches, and I feel more comfortable.”

Peraza also said Angels coaches changed his swing, getting rid of his leg kick and replacing it with a toe tap. They also changed the plane of his swing, which has helped him get the ball in the air more.

“I feel much more in control of my body,” Peraza said. “I’m hitting more line drives to right field. It’s pretty good.”

Montgomery said Peraza has shown more “raw talent” than he expected, with the versatility to play all four infield spots and surprising pop.

“He has as much raw power as anybody we have on the team, which is high praise considering you have Jo Adell and Mike (Trout) and (Taylor Ward) and those guys who can hit balls a long way,” Montgomery said. “I think what you’re starting to see is when you get a run of AB’s, you can put some quality AB’s together. You’ve seen the results of that. The AB’s are better. I’m excited about what he’s capable of doing.”

NOTES

Adell was scratched from the lineup because of vertigo for the third time in the last four days. Adell returned to action on Wednesday, but Montgomery theorized that the flight to Seattle on Wednesday evening set him back. “We’ll give him tonight and we’ll go day to day and see how he feels,” Montgomery said. …

Catcher Logan O’Hoppe (concussion) has recovered well. He is expected to be back in the lineup when he’s eligible on Tuesday in Milwaukee. “If you look at him, he’s smiling, moving around,” Montgomery said. “Everything is progressing very well.” …

First baseman Nolan Schanuel (wrist contusion) was scheduled to take batting practice in Arizona on Thursday. Schanuel could rejoin the Angels as soon as next week’s series against the Brewers in Milwaukee. …

Outfielder Jorge Soler (back) is also in Arizona, where he will “start some activity,” Montgomery said. …

Left-hander Tyler Anderson (oblique) is not expected to return this season, but he’s has been throwing and has also gone to Arizona to continue his rehab. “He said he feels noticeably better, but obliques are tricky,” Montgomery said. …

Angels minor leaguer Rio Foster is still in critical condition, but he’s now stable and breathing on his own, according to an update posted by his mother on a GoFundMe page on Thursday morning. Foster underwent brain surgery after being in a car accident last Friday. As of Thursday afternoon, the GoFundMe campaign had raised nearly $60,000 for his care.
