THE GAME: The Angels got solid work from three pitchers, but the hitters came up empty in a 1-0 loss to the Cincinnati Reds in a Cactus League game on Tuesday in Goodyear, Arizona.
PITCHING REPORT: Right-hander José Soriano gave up one run in 5⅓ innings, the longest outing for an Angels pitcher this spring. Soriano struck out six and did not walk any. He needed just 68 pitches to get 16 outs. “He didn’t even break a sweat,” Manager Ron Washington said. “That’s how clean it was.” Soriano acknowledged it was his best outing of the spring, but he said he wasn’t working on anything new. “The same thing as all spring,” Soriano said through an interpreter. “Just focusing on hitting the zone and getting outs as fast as I can.” … Left-hander José Quijada entered with one out and a runner and escaped the inning. It was the first time this spring that Quijada has worked on back-to-back days. … Left-hander José Suarez worked two scoreless innings, striking out two. It was Suarez’s first outing since he allowed six runs in a game last week. He has given up two runs in nine innings in his other four outings.
HITTING REPORT: The Angels were fortunate to get a hit in the first inning when the Reds allowed Nolan Schanuel’s wind-blown pop-up to drop in the infield, and after that they didn’t have a hit until Kyren Paris doubled in the eighth. Paris was then thrown out at the plate trying to score on a single to left field. Paris is 13 for 36 (.361) this spring. … Jo Adell went hitless in four at-bats, extending his slump to 0 for 22. “His timing is off, but I’m not worried about it,” Washington said. “He’s gonna catch up. The thing about spring training is sometimes you go through those lulls, but as long as you keep getting at-bats, there will be a pitcher that toes that rubber, that’ll get him to find his stuff before we get out of here.” … Minor leaguer Arol Vera had the Angels’ only other hit.
DEFENSE REPORT: Right fielder Mickey Moniak and Paris, the second baseman, combined on a relay to throw out a runner at the plate in the third inning. … Shortstop David Mershon made a nice play charging a slow hopper. … Adell made a catch of a line drive over his head in center field. After a rough start to his spring in center, Adell has handled the new position well.
