Tough blow for black-and-gold.
LAFC announced on Tuesday that defender Eddie Segura has undergone “successful surgery to repair a tear of his right anterior cruciate ligament” on Monday. The club has also likely ruled him out for the remainder of the 2021 season.
Segura, 24, has been a total lock for LAFC’s backline since arriving in 2019. The center back made 15 appearances this season, until being subbed out at the half of the July 24 game against the Vancouver Whitecaps, where he suffered the injury. All told, he had appeared in 71 straight regular season games for LAFC.
Any way you slice it, this is terrible news for LAFC. Segura was the defensive rock of the team, and while Bob Bradley has been using three-man center back formations and mixing and matching the combinations in the back this season in an effort to get results, Segura was arguably the most important member of that group. Now, Jesus David Murillo and Tristan Blackmon will likely be asked to form the dual anchors in central defense, and hopefully they can build a good chemistry together for the rest of the season.
Best wishes to Eddie on his recovery process, and hopefully we’ll see him back and ready to go in the spring.
