On January 30th 2021 it was announced that the Detroit Lions and the Los Angeles Rams have agreed to a trade that would bring quarterback Matthew Stafford to LA. Ever since that day the anticipation has been building to see what this means for a team that is only two years removed from a Super Bowl appearance with a defense that ranked best in the NFL just last season.
In three days, the veteran quarterback with elite arm talent will take the field at SoFi stadium and make his debut leading Sean McVay’s offense. The story goes, Stafford is a post season caliber passer limited by an organization that’s failed to build adequate support. Because of that, Stafford has been in and out of top 10 quarterback rankings throughout his career and in a recent NFL ranking heading into week one, Stafford is again outside of the top 10 quarterbacks.
NFL’s Gregg Rosenthal places Stafford 13th in a ranking that has the top five including the most predictable group of Patrick Mahomes, Aaron Rodgers, Josh Allen, Tom Brady, and Lamar Jackson.
Because of the rise of QBs like Josh Allen, Ryan Tannehill, and Justin Herbert, the top 10 is as tough as ever to crack. Let 13th be the starting point for the new Stafford era. The Rams QB1 can solidify his spot as a top 10 quarterback, but to do it, he’s got to start fast and take full advantage of his situation and all his weapons. He’s been preparing and we’ve been waiting since January 30th and here we are, the next time it’s Sunday… game on.
