Random Ramsdom: Sean McVay’s design set up Robert Wood’s Touchdown vs Texans

Los Angeles Rams News and Links for 11/1/21

The Los Angeles Rams produced a blowout victory against the now 1-7 Houston Texans to move on to 7-1. LA put on a scoring display with Matthew Stafford throwing for three Touchdowns, Darrell Henderson Jr scoring both by catch and by run, and Robert Woods contributing a scoring run on a nice end around.

Let’s have a look at the end around touchdown by Woods as it was a perfect demonstration of play design, blocking, and running.

The play takes place late in the third quarter when the Rams are already up by 31 points. To put the dagger in the game the Rams line up in a two by two formation with Ben Skowronek and Cooper Kupp to the left and Woods and Kendall Blanton to the right.

The play starts with a motion by Kupp which essentially takes his man out of the play since the defender follows. The defensive end crashes down the line in response to the play fake to Sony Michel. That action allows Woods to get around the edge and do so without the offense having to dedicate a blocker.

Kendall Blanton pulls around from the right ahead of Woods as a lead blocker and does a good job reading that the end has crashed and moves on to the next defender. The left tackle is Joseph Noteboom, filling in for Andrew Whitworth, and he makes a great block on the linebacker. Brian Allen gets upfield quickly from his center position to chip a corner defender and make his way all the way up to the safety for the final block. Blanton blocks the defender that followed over from the right and Skowronek makes a clean block on his man.

All that’s left is for Woods to take advantage of the great design and blocks that are set up by his teammates and he does just that for a 16 yard touchdown which then signaled mop up time in this blowout win against the Houston Texans.
