Through 12 seasons with the Detroit Lions, Matthew Stafford developed a reputation as one of the toughest players in the NFL. And now just a few weeks into his first year with the Rams, it doesn’t look like the Los Angeles sunshine has softened up him one bit.
During Monday’s training camp practice, the newly-acquired quarterback banged his right thumb on a teammate’s helmet — the same thumb he underwent surgery on earlier this offseason.
While X-Rays came back negative, Stafford was still expected to miss at least the next few days of practice.
But, like the NFL tough guy we’ve come to expect, the Rams’ QB1 insisted on suiting up for practice earlier today.
“It’s first day in pads,” Stafford said, per LA insider Ryan Kartje, “and I want to be out there.”
Sean McVay didn’t expect Matthew Stafford to practice today with his sore thumb. But Stafford insisted, even though his thumb is not 100%

Stafford played all 16 games last season, despite battling several injuries that few were even aware of.
In addition to the torn ligament in his right thumb, the former No. 1 overall pick played through a torn UCL in his left elbow, broken cartilage on his ribcage, a torn “something” on the back of his left knee and a sprained right ankle.
This kind of “play-through-it-all” mentality is nothing new for Stafford. Perhaps the perfect embodiment of his toughness came from a play during his rookie season in 2009, coming back into the game one play after separating his shoulder to throw a game-winning touchdown against the Browns.
Not only was Stafford back in action today, he was looking as good as ever.
