The Los Angeles Rams announced they have waived Joshua Karty, meaning Harrison Mevis will take over as the full-time kicker to finish out the 2025 season.
Karty has an exceptional finish to his rookie season with the Rams in 2024 but was unable to replicate that success this year. He had the most missed kicks in the NFL in the first half of the season as in eight games, he went 10-of-15 on field goals and 23-of-26 on extra points.
Some of those kicks were blocked and may not have been Karty’s fault, but the Rams still decided to bring in Mevis and so far in three games he has made both of his field goal attempts and all 13 of his extra points.
Mevis recently discussed the work he has been putting in to get to the point where he can be a full-time NFL kicker, via Wyatt Miller of TheRams.com:
“Just trusting the work that I put in,” Mevis said. “(You) do all the hard work in practice and then once you get in a game, everything’s easy.”
Mevis is known for his bigger physique and even has the nickname “Thicker Kicker,” which he said he likes:
“I like it,” Mevis said. “When you look at it from a team’s perspective, everyone around is like, ‘Damn, that guy has a nickname? He must be a dude.’ So it instills confidence in everyone around me that I’m gonna go out and do my job and make the kick, so I’ve always thought of it as a positive, and it’s also fun.”
It’s only been three games, but the addition of Mevis has been a huge boost for the Rams’ kicking game. For a team with legitimate Super Bowl aspirations, their kicking game was their biggest weakness in the first half of the season and seems to have been addressed.
Karty still has a lot of talent and may have been dealing with some mental hurdles, so hopefully he can get back on track and have a long NFL career. That just won’t come in Los Angeles this season.
Davante Adams having most fun he’s ever had playing football with Rams
The Rams offense has also been clicking thanks to Davante Adams and Matthew Stafford’s chemistry in the red zone. Following the Rams’ latest win, Adams said he’s having the most fun he’s ever had playing football as he leads the league in touchdowns with 12 in 11 games.
