Ahead of the 2021 Pro Football Hall of Fame inductions, a pretty substantial debate has popped up: which wide receiver duo is the greatest of all-time? As he prepares to enter the Hall of Fame, former St. Louis Rams superstar Isaac Bruce says he and Torry Holt deserve the honor.
Bruce played for the Rams from 1994-2007, finishing his lengthy career with the San Francisco 49ers for two years. He finished with 1,024 catches for 15,208 yards and 91 touchdowns, putting together eight 1,000 yard seasons along the way. Holt, a Ram from 1999-08, had similar career numbers, with 920/13,381/74 for his career. He played all but one season for the Rams, finishing with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2009.
Bruce will be a Hall of Famer in a few days, and Holt is likely to join him in Canton down the line. Another late 1990s/early 2000s wide receiver duo can lay claim to the title of best duo as well: Randy Moss and Cris Carter of the Minnesota Vikings. When asked about that pair, Bruce laid things out pretty clearly: “We won a Super Bowl.”
“I don’t know Isaac thinks he was better than,” Cris Carter said during an appearance on Good Morning Football. “If he thinks he was better than me, or he thinks Torry was better than me, because we know neither was better than Randy Moss.

“Randy and I played a combined 30 seasons. Torry and Isaac played a combined 27 seasons. They scored a combined 160 touchdowns, Randy and I scored a combined 288 touchdowns.”
Carter went on to compare the last 10 years of his and Bruce’s NFL careers, when Bruce had nine or more touchdowns one time (nine in 2000), while Carter did it seven times.
The debate ultimately comes down to team vs. individual accomplishments. Moss and Carter are probably each better than Bruce and Holt individually, but the latter pair did win a title. At the same time, they played in a historic offense with Kurt Warner, Marshall Faulk, Orlando Pace, and others. Had the two Vikings receivers been in that offense, I imagine they would have had a great chance to win a Super Bowl as well.
