Foles seems destined for yet another trade
Nick Foles was a pretty good high school basketball player, turning down offers from Georgetown and Baylor to instead play college football at Arizona State Michigan State Arizona. But given the number of times he’s already been traded, Foles’ career trajectory feels a lot more like that of an NBA shooting guard than an NFL quarterback.
Not only was Foles selected with a traded drafted pick (the Eagles traded a third and a fourth in exchange for linebacker DeMeco Ryans and the pick used on Foles), but three years later, Philadelphia sent him and some picks to the St. Louis Rams for Sam Bradford and some picks.
That’s more times than I’ve ever wanted to use “picks” in a sentence. A rather poor sentence, at that.
Then in 2020, Foles ended a one-year sentence with the Jacksonville Jaguars by being traded to the Chicago Bears in exchange for a fourth rounder. Only one year into his Bears career, Foles is the clear number three quarterback behind Andy Dalton and Justin Fields, and it’s the worst-kept NFL secret that he’ll be on the move eventually. Then almost by design, the head coach who helped guide Foles to a Super Bowl MVP award in 2017 also happened to be the first one who might need a starting quarterback replacement in Week 1.

On Monday, it was announced that Indianapolis Colts quarterback Carson Wentz will require foot surgery that could take him out for the most unusual timetable ever: 5 to 12 weeks. Even at five weeks, that makes it unlikely that Wentz will be ready to start in Week 1, but he could potentially make his Colts debut in Week 2 at home against the Los Angeles Rams.
However, that also feels soon and it could be that backup Jacob Eason is starting against the Rams. Or maybe Indianapolis will take action to get Foles into training camp as soon as possible. Foles was asked about it on Monday and he responded by saying that Reich might be his favorite coach of all time.

Foles has twice started against his former team since asking to be released in 2016.
In 2018, Foles started for the Eagles in a win over the Rams, going 24-of-31 for 270 yards with an interception. He also faced LA last season as a member of the Bears, going 28-of-40 with two interceptions in a 24-10 loss.
In any case, it sure seems like when the Colts host the Rams in Week 2, the starting quarterback will either be the injured guy who missed all of training camp, the second-year sixth round pick who hasn’t necessarily shined in camp, or Chicago’s number three QB.
