Cooper Kupp breaks down 'pretty insane' no-look throw by Matthew Stafford in camp

Cooper Kupp developed a strong chemistry with Jared Goff over the last four years, becoming the quarterback’s favorite target, especially on third down. He’ll have to build that same type of rapport with his new quarterback Matthew Stafford this year, and that has already begun at training camp.

Stafford has turned some heads with the way he’s thrown receivers open and manipulated defenders with his eyes, which has really impressed both Jalen Ramsey and Kupp. After practice last week, Kupp described a play Stafford made that really blew him away.

“He threw across the middle to Rob (Woods). He did a great job. He held the safety backside. It sounded crazy, we had a bust on the play. The guy that was supposed to go on the safety on the backside busted his route. For him to still hold that safety and then no-look this pass down the field and being able to – on the no-look – moving an underneath-defender was pretty insane. It was a pretty unbelievable play.”

Stafford has been throwing no-look passes for years, much like the way Patrick Mahomes does. It’s rare for a quarterback to pull those off, but he has the natural talent and throwing ability to do them with relative ease.

Don’t expect to see him throwing those types of passes every week, but his innate awareness and intelligence on the field allows him to move defenders with his eyes, even if he doesn’t throw a no-look pass after that.

Kupp spoke more about Stafford’s manipulation of defenders, raving about that aspect of the quarterback’s game.

“The subtleties in terms of how he’s moving defenses, what he’s doing with his eyes. He made a throw out here today that was just disgusting,” Kupp said. “He is looking guys off mid-throw, where he’s throwing across his body. The ball is out before receivers are looking. Just the subtleties within his drops and how he’s manipulating guys – I think that’s kind of the big thing that I’ve seen.”

The Rams seem to have found the perfect quarterback for their offense and hopefully that leads to them hosting a Super Bowl in their own building next February.
