Justin Herbert Shares Honest Admission On Patrick Mahomes Comment

July 28, 2021 by The Spun Leave a Comment

Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert prepares to throw. He stepped in for the injured Tyrod Taylor in Week 2.

After an incredible rookie season, Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert emerged as arguably the biggest threat to Patrick Mahomes‘ dominance in the AFC West. But Mahomes doesn’t necessarily see it that way.

Mahomes recently told the media “I’ll see it when I believe it” in regards to Herbert’s rising stardom before clarifying his position. But when Herbert learned that Mahomes wasn’t taking the threat he poses that seriously, he admitted he’s happy enough that Mahomes knows who he is.

“I think it’s pretty cool that Patrick Mahomes knows who I am,” Herbert told the media today, via ProFootballTalk. “I’m cool with it. I have such great respect for what he’s been able to do, and I’ve watched him so much.”

Herbert went 1-1 against the Kansas City Chiefs this year, but didn’t face Patrick Mahomes in the winning effort. He was pretty superb in both meetings though, throwing for over 300 yards in both meetings while scoring six total touchdowns.

Justin Herbert ultimately had a historic rookie season for the Chargers. He finished the season with 31 touchdowns and 4,336 passing yards while completing 66.55-percent of his passes.

Unfortunately, Herbert’s strong season wasn’t enough to get the Chargers over the hump. They went 7-9 overall and fired head coach Anthony Lynn after the season. Brandon Staley is set to take over as head coach this season.

Expectations for Herbert are going to be incredibly high heading into this coming season – even with a new head coach. While he may not be ready to take down Mahomes in Week 3, he may be ready by season’s end.

Who will play better in the Chiefs-Chargers games this year: Patrick Mahomes or Justin Herbert?
