All eyes will be on these players during the preseason finale.
The preseason finale for the Chargers is finally here.
Two weeks from tomorrow, the Bolts will be taking the field in Washington to face the Football Team in what’s expected to be a really exciting matchup filled to the brim with young talent.
Like last week, Garrett, Matthew, and I each highlighted one offensive and defensive player each that we will be keeping a close eye on during tonight’s game.
Let’s get into it.
Michael: I’ll be watching the battle at running back between Joshua Kelley and Larry Rountree. There’s a chance one of them does not make the final 53-man roster and my money is still on Rountree being the guy. My only hope is one doesn’t get reps behind the second-team line while the other gets most of their looks behind the third team. Regardless, I think whoever stands out, whatever their situation looks like, will end up being the team’s third back behind Austin Ekeler and Justin Jackson.
Matthew: On offense I’m going to be most interested in watching Easton Stick. I honestly think the staff is leaning towards keeping Chase Daniel, but not by much. If Stick plays well today he may swing things in his direction.
Garrett: Trey Pipkins’ “developmental player” tag has worn off and with his performance last week he is a real cut candidate. If he struggles like he did against the 49ers he could be gone.
Michael: I’ll be keeping an eye on rookie safety Mark Webb tonight. The safety group is already really shallow and I can’t help but feel like the talent really drops off from the starters to the backups. If this secondary wants to be as good as they say they do, the third and fourth guys who will rotate in need to be as solid as possible. I wasn’t the biggest fan of this pick because the team does not have a true free safety on the team other than Nasir Adderley. Webb, Alohi Gilman, and Ben DeLuca are all strong safeties who thrive in and around the box. I wouldn’t trust either of them to ever be the lone man in single-high coverage.
Matthew: On Defense it’s Forrest Merrill. He’s looked surprisingly good in the previous 2 games and I think he has one of the best chances to be the UDFA from this year that makes the 53.Bonus: All eyes should be on the kicking competition. It really is close enough that tonight’s game will likely decide who is the team’s Kicker (to start) this season.
Garrett: Cortez Broughton seemed to be on the outside looking in when camp kicked off but with the way he’s been playing in the last two preseason games he may have made a case for keeping on the final roster. He could earn a roster spot today with another good performance.
