Report: Lakers sign Malik Monk to one-year deal

The Los Angeles Lakers are continuing their run of free agent signings by acquiring Malik Monk, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

Terms of the deal have not been disclosed yet but according to Bobby Marks of ESPN, the Lakers still have their full taxpayer mid-level exception which would mean that Monk signed on a veteran minimum.

Monk is a 23-year-old shooting guard who spent his first four seasons in the NBA with the Charlotte Hornets. The Hornets ultimately decided to rescind his qualifying offer this summer, making him an unrestricted free agent.

Monk was in and out of the Hornets’ lineup last season in a crowded backcourt that included rookie of the year winner LaMelo Ball. Still, in his 42 appearances, Monk averaged 11.7 points per game while shooting over 40 percent from three on more than five attempts per game, giving some optimism that he can help the Lakers’ shooting issues.

Monk, alongside Anthony Davis, is only the second player under contract with the Lakers under 30 years old (excluding two way contracts).
