Report: Lakers sign Kendrick Nunn to two-year deal

The Los Angeles Lakers roster is continuing to take form through the second day of free agency. The latest signing is guard Kendrick Nunn who is reportedly coming to Los Angeles on a two-year contract worth about $10 million, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic. That means he will take the Lakers’ taxpayer mid-level exception leaving only minimum contracts for other free agents.

The 26-year old Nunn spent the first two seasons of his career with the Heat. He was signed as an undrafted free agent after his stock fell due to a domestic violence incident.

In those two seasons, Nunn has averaged 15 points and three assists per game, shooting 46 percent from the field and 38 percent from three while playing primarily as a starter. He was often left out of the Heat’s playoff rotation during their run to the Finals when they lost to the Lakers in six games.

Kendrick Nunn will have a player option in the second year of his contract. According to Charania and Brad Turner of the LA Times, he declined bigger offers including from the Knicks to sign with the Lakers.

Nunn’s signing takes the Lakers to 13 players under contract including Alfonzo McKinnie who has a non-guaranteed deal. That means they are left with at least two open roster spots though it’s possible and perhaps likely that they keep one open until after the trade deadline for flexibility and money saving purposes.

Nunn joins a backcourt that will feature stiff competition between Malik Monk, Wayne Ellington, Talen Horton-Tucker, and Kent Bazemore alongside superstar acquisition Russell Westbrook.
