The 2021 NBA Free Agency period has begun, and at this time they have not made any signings. Of course, they’ve already agreed to the trade that will get them Russell Westbrook from the Wizards, but even that trade may include other teams and players once it can be officially completed on August 6th. Until then, the Lakers will be looking to sign multiple players to veteran minimum contracts, while they all have the taxpayer’s mid-level exception around $5.9 million to use on a player (or multiple players). Even though they haven’t officially signed anyone per the news breaking gods Adrian Wojnarowski and Shams Charania, Yahoo Sports’ Chris Haynes reported on NBA TV that they are currently pursuing an old friend in Danny Green.
Haynes also confirmed a previous report that the Lakers and Dwight Howard may be working on a reunion as well.
They kinda want to get the band back together. I’m talking about that team that won the (2020) NBA Finals in the bubble two years ago. Sources told me that Danny Green is a player they are pursuing, and Dwight Howard, two players that played with the Philadelphia 76ers. We’ve seen…they lacked big man help last year. I mean they had players on that roster, they just didn’t find ways to utilize them correctly. So you see Montrezl Harrell is out, Marc Gasol was never a consistent threat throughout the season and the playoffs. Dwight Howard played (phenomenally) before he bolted for Philly. Danny Green is the shooter that the Lakers desperately need. Now, Danny Green struggled at times with the Lakers finding his shooting touch, but if you look at that roster I don’t think there’s anyone on that roster that was a better shooter than him.
What’s left for the Lakers after signing Russ?

It would be assumed that Danny Green would sign and occupy the MLE for $5.9 million, but honestly, even that would probably be an underpay to Green. Would he take a paycut to return to a franchise where he was so criticized by the fans for his poor shooting? Green definitely seemed to be annoyed with those abrasive Lakers fans towards the end of his time there.
As free agency continues to escalate, we’ll eventually find out if Green is willing to return.
