Other than just healing from their injuries, the biggest improvement that the Los Angeles Lakers need to make this offseason is in their shooting. They ranked 21st in the NBA in three-point percentage, with their shooting only becoming worse in their six-game, first round defeat to the Phoenix Suns. The Lakers have shown that they may know this through the 2021 NBA Draft prospects that they’ve worked out, as well as through the rumors of their interest in trading for the Kings’ Buddy Hield. They’ve been connected to another three-point specialist today, as they are reportedly interested in trading for the Brooklyn Nets’ Landry Shamet. SNY’s Ian Begley reported this, saying that the Dallas Mavericks and New Orleans Pelicans were also interested.

Shamet will be entering his fourth season after being drafted out of Wichita State in 2018 (Shamet will be a restricted free agent in the 2022 offseason). As previously stated, his biggest claim to fame is his three-point shooting. However, his three-point shooting percentage has dipped in the past two seasons (37.5% in the 2019-20 season and 38.7% in the 2020-21 season) compared to his sensational rookie season beyond the arc (42.2%).
Still, let’s not act like the Lakers wouldn’t welcome a 38.7% three-point shooter (on 5.5 attempts per game in the 2020-21 season) with the widest, most open arms possible. The Lakers only had three players who played 50 or more games and averaged better than a 38.7% mark, and two of those players — Marc Gasol and Alex Caruso with 41.0% each — only attempted 2.3 and 2.4 attempts per game, respectively (the other player was Kentavious Caldwell-Pope who averaged 41.0% on 4.4 attempts per game).
SNY’s Ian Begley stated that it’d be “straightforward” for the Nets to trade Landry Shamet for a first-rounder, with a move-up in the draft order probably being preferred for the Nets as they currently hold the 27th overall pick. It’d be interesting to see if the Lakers could exchange their 22nd overall pick with the Nets’, as this would still allow the Nets to move up to secure a player they like that they know they wouldn’t be able to attain at 27.
