After the Russell Westbrook trade, free agency will look drastically different for the Lakers this summer as they try to build around their new big three.
In a matter of hours, if not minutes, last week, the Lakers offseason plans changed drastically. The trade for Russell Westbrook changed how the Lakers could acquire players this summer, who they would target and the number of guys needed to fill out the roster.
By acquiring a third star, the Lakers have dwindled the roster down to just five contracts, but now may have a pick of veterans to sign as they look to fill out the team with ballhandlers, shooters, wing players and size. Or basically, a little bit of everything.
Today’s episode of “Can U Dig It” — a podcast by Silver Screen and Roll — hosts Jacob Rude and Christian Rivas took all of that information and put it into an expansive 2021 NBA Free Agency Show as they tried to preview what is to come in the ensuing days. Before they jumped into any of that, though, they each offered some brief reactions to the Westbrook trade, what it means for the Lakers in the present, and how it could work out on the court.
Then, they dove into free agency by each offering up suggestions for guards, wings and big men the Lakers could and should sign in the offseason. The pair talked about what type of players to expect the Lakers to target at each position, and what skillsets the team now needs to build around Westbrook, LeBron James and Anthony Davis.
Lastly, they fielded questions from Twitter on bold predictions for the offseason, whether it be in the form of a Schröder sign-and-trade, or players to sign in free agency.
