Los Angeles Lakers Just Signed Another Key Free Agent

August 3, 2021 by The Spun Leave a Comment

Miami Heat guard Kendrick Nunn guards Los Angeles Lakers forward LeBron James in the 2020 NBA Finals.

The Los Angeles Lakers have already unleashed a slew of offseason moves ahead of the 2021-22 season. And on Tuesday afternoon, the 2020 NBA champs added another free-agent addition to the list.

According to ESPN NBA insider Adrian Wojnaroski, the Lakers have signed former Miami Heat guard Kendrick Nunn to their new-look roster.

Penning a two-year deal, Nunn reportedly took a significant pay cut in order to chase an NBA title in LA.

Free agent guard Kendrick Nunn has agreed to a two-year deal with the Los Angeles Lakers, source tells ESPN. Deal includes a player option. Nunn turned down significantly more money to chase a title with the Lakers.

After going undrafted in 2018, Nunn was picked up by the Miami Heat. Following his debut season in 2019-20, the talented young guard was named to the NBA’s All-Rookie First-Team for his breakout 15.3 points per game averages. He continued his solid scoring production this past season with 14.6 ppg.

Following the blockbuster trade for superstar point guard Russel Westbrook last week, the Lakers have gone all out on retooling their 2021 roster.

In addition to Nunn, the LA front office have also added 12-time All Star Carmelo Anthony, former No. 11 pick Malik Monk and four former Laker veterans in Trevor Ariza, Wayne Ellington, Dwight Howard and Kent Bazemore.

Each of these additions will help fill voids left by the departures of Kyle Kuzma, Montrezl Harrell, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope (all included in Westbrook trade) and Alex Caruso (left in free agency to Chicago).

Nunn brings some much-needed youth onto this new-look Lakers roster. With the exceptions of Nunn and Monk, each of these offseason additions for Los Angeles exceed 30 years of age.

The Lakers will get another boost of young talent from returning guard Talen Horton-Tucker, who signed a three-year, $32 million deal earlier this afternoon.

Pairing this combination of veteran leadership and youthful talent with returning centerpieces LeBron James and Anthony Davis, the Lakers will look to improve on last year’s first-round exit in 2021-22.
