F%#$%: You can probably make an educated guess at what that word is meant to say if you watched the Lakers game against the Thunder on Thursday. The Lakers were up 41-19 at the end of the first quarter and led by as much as 26 at one point, only to collapse in the second half. The Thunder took advantage, beating them 123-115 to stun the NBA world and get their first win over a team highly believed to be title contenders.
It’s an embarrassing and historical loss, as the Lakers were 230-0 in the past 25 years when up by at least 25 points or more in a game (shout out Chris Geeter of Spectrum SportsNet). The team is now 230-1 in those games, with this hopefully lighting a fire under their asses to not let their feet off the gas pedal no matter what they think of their opponents. That’ll surely be needed between now and this time next week, as they face more of the worst teams in the NBA in the Cavaliers (tonight), Rockets (Sunday and Tuesday), and…would you look at that…the Thunder again (Thursday).
Wins against Grizzlies, Spurs: This week wasn’t all doom and gloom, as they kicked it off with two straight wins against the Grizzlies and Spurs. Both games were very exciting too (whether that’s because the Lakers played poorly at times to make them close games is neither here nor there), with the Grizzlies game coming down to the wire and the Spurs game going to overtime.
In the Grizzlies game on Sunday, it was all about Carmelo Anthony as he led the team with 28 points. He was absolutely blistering from three, making six of eight attempts as he had the Staples Center crowd in a frenzy.
LeBron James missed the Spurs (as well as the Thunder game) due to a sore right ankle sustained in the Grizzlies game, but that didn’t stop the Lakers from putting up a monster 125 points. The offense can be attributed to none other than Russell Westbrook (33 points, 10 rebounds, eight assists) and Anthony Davis (35 points, 17 rebounds, and four blocks) as the two stuffed the stat sheet to carry the team to a win.
