The Lakers will pay homage to each decade of their storied franchise in their City Edition jersey celebrating the league’s 75th anniversary.
The Los Angeles Lakers, along with the rest of the league, announced their respective Nike NBA City Edition uniforms on Monday morning, celebrating the league’s 75th anniversary in the process.
For the Lakers, the team’s design pays homage to each decade of Lakers dynasties, highlighted by the team’s Laker Purple that began in the 1960s.

The team’s press release explained more details about the jersey, and the inspiration behind it’s various touches.
Over the last seven decades, the Los Angeles Lakers have won on the biggest stages, showing the world what Lakers Basketball is all about — persistence, passion, and the pursuit of excellence. The 2021-22 Los Angeles Lakers Nike NBA City Edition uniform is a culmination of the Lakers’ essence – 17 championships built atop power post-ups and no-look fast breaks, skyhooks, baby hooks, and thunderous alley-oops.
“A team whose innovation transformed into tradition,” says Aaron Cain, VP/GM, Men’s, at NIKE, Inc. “Nike worked with the Lakers to design the Nike NBA City Edition Uniform to reflect that dynastic history — one that honors past glory and sets the course for all the history that’s yet to be written.”
From head to toe, the primary color is the iconic Laker Purple that emerged in the late 1960s. The stars surrounding the uniform number evoke the groundbreaking Minneapolis Lakers of the early 1960s. The belt buckle includes the famous “L” logo from the three-peat era of the 2000s and the shorts incorporate the baby blue from its original championship teams in Minneapolis — the squads that laid the foundation for a franchise unlike any other.
The design features specific callbacks to each decade, ranging from the iconic Minneapolis blue color to the triangular name design of the 60s, to the drop shadow numbering of the Showtime Lakers as each era of the Lakers has a specific callback.
