Lakers sign Wayne Ellington Jr. to a one-year deal

The Los Angeles Lakers are in the family business. That’s been fully evidenced through the first three moves of their 2021 NBA Free Agency, as they’ve now signed Wayne Ellington Jr. to a one-year deal, assumedly at the veteran minimum. The Lakers have already signed Dwight Howard and Trevor Ariza to one-year deals (h/t to Yahoo Sports’ Chris Haynes for first reporting the deal for Ellington).

It was previously reported in the past few days that the Ellington was interested in playing alongside LeBron James, Anthony Davis, and Russell Westbrook on the Lakers.

Wayne Ellington Jr. is a career 38.2% shooter from three-point distance. He’s coming off one of the best shooting years of his career last season with the Detroit Pistons, hitting 42.2% of his 6.0 three-point attempts per game. Overall, Ellington averaged 9.6 points, 1.8 rebounds, and 1.5 assists in 46 games played last season. Ellington started 31 of those 46 games for the Pistons.

As I previously said, this isn’t the first time that Ellington will have put on the purple-and-gold. He played for the Lakers for one lone 2014-15 season, alongside Kobe Bryant in his second-to-last season. During that season, Ellington averaged 10.0 points (37.0 3P%), 3.2 rebounds, and 1.6 assists per game.

Ellington will probably fill a significant role on this Lakers team, as he is currently the sole three-point specialist on the team. The team is still reportedly trying to swing a deal for the Kings’ Buddy Hield, but until then, it seems like Ellington will fill a similar role as Kentavious Caldwell-Pope for this 2021-22 roster.

Look for the Lakers to possibly sign addition veteran shooters, such as Carmelo Anthony, Rudy Gay, or J.J. Redick.
