Los Angeles Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka has been very busy this offseason, acquiring Russell Westbrook in a blockbuster trade and signing a plethora of veterans to fill out the rest of the roster. Though he’s already made a handful of acquisitions this summer, it appears he’s not done.
According to NBA insider Shams Charania, the Lakers are the frontrunners to sign Rajon Rondo. The veteran point guard has agreed to a contract buyout with the Memphis Grizzlies and will become a free agent.
Rondo is expected to clear waivers on Monday. Once that happens, he can negotiate a deal with the Lakers.
The Lakers are in need of a point guard to run their second unit, so adding Rondo to the mix makes a lot of sense. It also helps that he’s familiar with Frank Vogel’s system.
Rondo played a significant role during Los Angeles’ championship run in 2020, averaging 8.9 points and 6.6 assists per game.

After winning the NBA Finals with the Lakers, Rondo signed a multi-year deal with the Atlanta Hawks in November of 2020. He was then traded to the Los Angeles Clippers in March.
Two weeks ago, the Clippers sent Rondo to the Grizzlies in a trade involving Eric Bledsoe. You can tell it didn’t take very long for Rondo to get out of Memphis.
If Rondo does reunite with the Lakers, it’ll only strengthen their odds as the Western Conference favorites.
