The Lakers’ number one priority going into this offseason was always going to be signing Anthony Davis to a deal, as it was long expected he would decline his player option for the 2020-21 season to acquire a larger deal. He’s reportedly going to do that, while it is also heavily reported that he will sign with the Lakers once he is able to after negotiations can begin Friday.
Ahead of his free agency, Anthony Davis took some time to talk to Chris Haynes of Yahoo Sports. Davis dodged questions in a tongue-in-cheek sort of way about his free agency, even correcting Haynes when he assumed Davis as being a part of the Lakers, to which Davis said “I don’t have a team, Chris”. Haynes was able to get him to answer one of his questions, asking Davis what he thought of the Lakers’ reported trade for the Thunder’s Dennis Schröder. Here’s what Davis had to say (full four-minute preview of the interview found here):
“He’s a great pickup, with Schröder alongside LeBron, and the other guys they (Lakers) decide to acquire or whatever…I think it was a good pickup. Like you said, he could easily win sixth man of the year, any given year. He played great alongside C.P. (Chris Paul) and Shai (Gilgeous-Alexander). He’s tough, he shot the ball well this year, he can get in the paint, he can find guys, and he’s very, very scrappy. I think it was a good move, a good pickup for the Los Angeles Lakers.”

Davis definitely sounds happy about the move that the Lakers made, but who knows what that will mean for one of Davis’ favorite teammates of his career, Rajon Rondo. Dennis Schöder would theoretically be taking the offensive play-making role off the bench that Rondo filled, as it is also being reported that Rondo will be opting-out of his contract with plenty of suitors that want his services.
Either way, I’m sure every Lakers fans is looking forward to Davis signing that contract to suit up alongside LeBron James and Dennis Schröder at the end of December.
