Trevor Bauer’s administrative leave has been extended for a third time by Major League Baseball, this time through Aug. 6.
Bauer was originally placed on leave July 2 after sexual assault allegations against him became public. He has not pitched for the Dodgers since June 28 but continues to get paid while on administrative leave. The players’ union must agree to each extension.
Bauer appeared in court Friday at a hearing regarding the protective order sought by the woman who has accused him of violent behavior during two sexual encounters earlier this year at his Pasadena home.
At Friday’s hearing, a judge extended the temporary restraining order obtained by the woman against Bauer and delayed the beginning of the hearing until Aug. 2, with Aug. 3 and 19 also set aside for the proceeding during which both sides have indicated they will call witnesses. Bauer’s attorney requested the delay, saying they received the woman’s witness list late and had insufficient time to prepare.
Police in Pasadena are investigating the woman’s allegations for potential criminal charges. That investigation and MLB’s investigation into the incidents are both still ongoing.
Bauer has been accused by the San Diego woman of choking her until she lost consciousness on multiple occasions, punching her in several areas of her body and leaving her with injuries that required hospitalization over the course of two sexual encounters earlier this year, according to the ex parte domestic violence restraining order that was filed in L.A. County Superior Court in late June.
If the MLBPA had not agreed to the extensions of administrative leave, MLB would have faced a decision to either allow Bauer back on the Dodgers’ active roster while criminal charges are being investigated or hand out punishment before legal proceedings are resolved.
Bauer has denied the accusations through his representatives.
