Miguel Vargas goes off in Tulsa’s record day

Drillers set a franchise record with 23 runs scored on Sunday

It was a big day for Dodgers Double-A affiliate Tulsa, who broke a 31-year-old franchise record for runs in a game, fueled by the top of the lineup.

Player of the day

Miguel Vargas continues to impress in Double-A Tulsa, at 21 years old the youngest on the team to play more than five games. He drove in eight runs and scored four times in Tulsa’s blowout win on Sunday.

He drew a bases-loaded walk in the second inning, doubled home three runs in the third, walked and scored in the fifth, singled home a run in the sixth, then finished off his day with a three-run home run in the eighth.

Twelve of Vargas’ 35 games in Double-A have featured multiple hits, and with Tulsa he’s hitting .272/.355/.493 with eight home runs, and has increased his walk rate from 5.2 percent this year in High-A Great Lakes to 10.3 percent with the Drillers.

Triple-A Oklahoma City

Oklahoma City chipped away all game, but a seven-run second inning proved enough for the Sugar Land Skeeters (Astros) to claim a road win. OKC starter Markus Solbach allowed 10 runs and recorded 10 outs.

Keibert Ruiz did not homer, but he did settle for a double. Matt Davidson and Zach Reks did homer for Oklahoma City.

Double-A Tulsa

The Drillers set a franchise record with 23 runs scored in a rout of the Northwest Arkansas (Royals). The old record was 22 runs, set on July 29, 1990, back when the Drillers were a Rangers affiliate. Former Oklahoma City manager and current OKC bench coach Bill Haselman played left field for Tulsa in that game.

In addition to Vargas’ big day, James Outman hit his first home run in Double-A after getting promoted on Thursday. Michael Busch doubles, singled, walked twice, and Outman, Busch, and Vargas — the first three hitters for Tulsa — each scored four runs.

Ryan Noda hit his team-leading 14th home run, doubled, singled, walked twice, and drove in five. Tulsa scored seven runs in the second inning, six in the third, and five more in the eighth inning.

The Drillers passed along that the Tulsa professional baseball record for runs in a game is 31, scored in 1949 by the Tulsa Oilers, a Double-A affiliate of the Reds that included first baseman Joe Adcock, among others.

High-A Great Lakes

Great Lakes’ comeback effort fell short, losing a one-run affair to the Lake County Captains (Cleveland). Down 7-3 entering the ninth, Zac Ching had the third of his three hits on the day, a three-run home run to pull the Loons to within a run with two outs. But the game ended immediately after, throwing fuel on the stench-filled “home runs are rally killers” fire.

Brandon Lewis and Justin Yurchak also homered for Great Lakes.

Low-A Rancho Cucamonga

The Quakes finished off a six-game sweep of the Visalia Rawhide (Diamondbacks) to start a 12-game road trip. Jorbit Vivas, playing second base on Sunday, hit a two-run home run in the fourth and an RBI double in the eighth. Vivas played in five of the six games in Visalia — including twice each at third base and designated hitter — and reached base at least twice in each game. In the series, Vivas was 7-for-21 (.333) with two home runs, two doubles, nine runs scored, and nine RBI.

Aldry Acosta, a 21-year-old right-hander signed by the Dodgers out of Venezuela in 2016, struck out three in two scoreless innings of relief for the win.
