Jose Ramos shines with three hits for Rancho

The 20-year-old reached base four times Friday

Friday night in the Dodgers minor leagues saw three teams lose and one team come out on top in a pitcher’s duel.

Player of the day

Outfielder Jose Ramos drove in three of the Quakes five runs on a night that got away from Rancho quickly. The Dodgers No. 16 prospect, according to MLB Pipeline, hit a two-run homer in the eighth and singled in another in the ninth.

A hit by the pitch and a double earlier in the night meant Ramos was on base four time in a 3-for-4 effort. It was the 18th multi-hit game for the 20-year-old, including seven of three or more.

Triple-A Oklahoma City

The Dodgers scored one in the ninth but would strand the tying run in a 5-4 loss to Las Vegas (Athletics).

The late run was the first for the Dodgers since the second inning when Deacon Liput smacked a three-run homer to give Oklahoma City an early 3-0 advantage.

Vidal Nuño allowed a solo homer in the fourth and three-run shot to Khris Davis in the fifth to cough up the lead. The Aviators scored what would prove to be the winning run in the top of the ninth off Kevin Quackenbush.

Cristian Santana went 3-for-4 for OKC and catcher Anthony Bamboo was 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored.

Double-A Tulsa

A Juan Zabala RBI-single and a run-scoring wild pitch in the second inning gave the Drillers all the runs they would need in a 2-1 win over Wichita (Twins).

Clayton Beeter struck out a career-high eight batters over 3.1 IP scoreless Friday. The right-hander struck out four batters in the inning after a wild third strike to the third batter. Instead of striking out the side in a 1-2-3 first, Beeter needed 12 more pitches to get the other strikeout that followed a walk.

Friday was the first time in his young career that Beeter pitched into the fourth inning. Those 12 extra pitches in the first might have prevented the chance of completing the frame.

The 66th overall pick on the 2020 draft for the Dodgers, Beeter has stuck out 67 in 43.2 IP with a 2.89 ERA in 25 games (24 starts) this season.

Infielder Miguel Vargas was 3-for-4 at the plate and now has 10 games this season with three hits. It was also the 40th game Vargas had multiple hits in 2021.

High-A Great Lakes

There weren’t a ton of positives for the Loons in a 5-0 loss to Lake County (Indians).

Catcher Carson Taylor had two of the four hits for Great Lakes, while Cole Percival went 3.2 scoreless in the middle of this game. Percival kept the Loons in the game, striking out five of the 14 batters he faced.

The offense just never came to life.

Low-A Rancho Cucamonga

The Quakes were blown out by Visalia (Diamondbacks) on the road to the tune of a 15-5 final.

Rancho pitching stumbled out of the gate and couldn’t recover. Already down 5-1 when he entered in the fourth, Huei-Sheng Lin was tagged for seven runs over the next two innings to blow the game wide open.

The one shining bright spot was the big night for Ramos with the bat.

Transactions

Triple-A: Sheldon Neuse, Tim Federowicz and Lukę Raley were all placed on the 7-day injured list. Matt Davidson was activated from the 60-day injured list. Darien Nuñez was optioned from the Dodgers and Neftali Feliz was assigned to Oklahoma City after he was designated for assignment Tuesday.

Low-A: Andre Jackson was recalled to the Dodgers.

  • Tulsa 2, Wichita 1
