Both pitchers are out of options, and are now free agents. Dodgers have 36 players on the 40-man roster, including 22 pitchers and 14 position players.
The Dodgers cut a pair of pitchers ahead of Friday’s deadline to tender contracts to players on the 40-man roster. Brent Honeywell and Zach Logue were non-tendered, making them free agents.
Honeywell was a cult hero of sorts in the Dodgers bullpen, taking the ball whenever asked and pitching for as long as they would let him go. The Dodgers claimed Honeywell off waivers in July because they were out of pitchers and needed to fill innings on the final day before the All-Star break.
Honeywell’s role at times was to soak up innings to keep other pitchers fresh, which he filled with aplomb during the postseason. The right-hander entered Game 5 of the NLCS down six runs and got 14 outs, after which Max Muncy told Honeywell, “You just won us Game 6.”
Earlier in that series against the Mets, Honeywell pitched three scoreless innings, all while the Dodgers were trailing in Game 2.
“It was more go until [manager Dave Roberts] takes the ball from me. That’s how I want to pitch anyway, especially when the game didn’t go necessarily as planned,” Honeywell said at the time. “But you can’t really plan for baseball.”
Honeywell during the regular season had a 2.62 ERA and 4.27 FIP in 18 games, with 17 strikeouts and nine walks in 34⅓ innings. The 29-year-old is out of options, which likely factored into his getting non-tendered.
Logue, who was a September minor league pick-up, is also out of options after 2024. The left-hander appeared in two games for the Dodgers in the final month of the regular season, allowing four runs in two innings, with four strikeouts.
The 28-year-old was the 39th of 40 pitchers used by the Dodgers this season, setting a franchise record.
Friday was busy with Dodgers transactions. The team also signed arbitration-eligible pitchers Dustin May and Tony Gonsolin to deals for 2025, avoiding salary arbitration. Both pitchers missed the entire 2024 season after surgeries.
With these moves, the Dodgers now have 36 players on the 40-man roster, including 22 pitchers and 14 position players.
